How to Find Frames That Fit Your Face Shape

Posted by Meridian Editorial on Jan 19 2026

The old advice — round faces get angular frames, angular faces get round ones — is a decent starting point, but it's only that. Here's how to actually use it.

Find your face shape in ten seconds

Pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror. Is your face about as wide as it is long (round), longer than wide with a squared jaw (square), longer than wide with a curved jaw (oval), or widest at the forehead (heart)?

The contrast principle

Frames look intentional when they contrast your features. A soft round face gets structure from a squared frame like the Summit Square; a strong jaw is softened by curves like the Rosewood Round. Oval faces are the lucky ones — nearly everything works, including bolder shapes like the Driftwood Wayfarer.

Three measurements that matter more

  • Frame width: the frame should end roughly where your temples do. Wider reads oversized; narrower pinches.
  • Brow line: the top of the frame should trace just below your eyebrows, not cover them.
  • Pupil position: your eyes should sit at or slightly above the horizontal center of each lens.

When to break the rules

If you put on a "wrong" frame and love it, wear it. The shape guide gets you to a good starting rack; your own reaction picks the winner. Every Meridian frame lists its exact lens-bridge-temple measurements, so once you know a size that works, you can match it across styles — our Frame Size & Fit Guide shows you how to read the numbers printed inside your current pair.
