Polarized vs. Non-Polarized: Which Sunglasses Do You Actually Need?

"Polarized" is the most misunderstood word on a sunglass tag. It is not a measure of darkness, and it has nothing to do with UV protection. Here's what it actually does.

What polarization does

Light that bounces off flat surfaces — wet roads, water, car hoods — arrives mostly horizontally oriented. A polarized filter blocks that orientation, which erases reflected glare while letting the rest of the scene through. On the water or behind the wheel, the difference is dramatic: our Driftwood Wayfarer uses a polarized lens for exactly those conditions.

What it doesn't do

UV protection is a separate property baked into the lens material. Every Meridian lens — polarized or not — blocks 100% of UVA and UVB. A cheap polarized lens without UV protection is worse than a quality non-polarized one, because the dark tint dilates your pupils and lets more stray UV in.

When to skip polarization

  • Screens: LCD dashboards, phones, and ATMs can black out or rainbow through a polarized filter.
  • Flying and skiing: pilots and skiers often need to see icy patches and instrument screens that polarization hides — it's why our Velocity Cycling Shields use a high-contrast mirror tint instead.
  • Low light: gradient non-polarized lenses like the Horizon Aviator's keep shadows readable at dusk.

The short version

Water and driving: polarized. Screens, snow, and speed: high-quality non-polarized with a contrast tint. Either way, insist on UV400 — that part is non-negotiable.
